Lamenting Satanas

Anonymous Blackened Death Metal

Lamenting Satanas. “Invocations” marks an evolution in Lamenting Satanas’ dynamic and abrasive sound, weaving in folk-inspired passages, classical guitar, and an eclectic array of instruments—including tablas, steel tongue drums, lutes, lamellophones, rainsticks, and various custom percussion. This progression, paired with their signature scorching riffs, pummeling drums, and venomous, razor-sharp vocals, offers a refreshing take on a genre in dire need of revitalization. While maintaining the coldest wave of frozen atmosphere throughout, the album reaches its peak with the final track, 'Invocations: Light Take Me,' a 10-minute epic closer that is as captivating as it is grandiose. With “Invocations,” Lamenting Satanas summons a storm of sound and spirit—both a reckoning and a revelation in the evolving pantheon of extreme music!

Lamenting Satanas is a blackened death metal band from the USA with a very fierce sound, and less than one year after their debut album “Scorn”  here they are again with “Invocations”.

As in their album from 2024, there’s an overwhelming intensity emanating from this release. Also, plenty of skills showed by the musicians, who hide themselves behind Roman numerals, being I the vocalist, II the person in charge of guitars, drums, synths, percussion and also vocals, III the one who plays guitars and keys, and IV the bassist. So, no idea of their names, nor their faces, ‘cause they always appear in the shadows in the photos. What a mysterious and intriguing band!

This is a great album: complex, dark, sinister, also melodic, stunning in so many ways. 10/10

This album thoroughly impressed me from beginning to end. Lamenting Satanas displays a top-tier ability to deliver chaotic and skin-tearing intensity. The drumming is impeccable, with seriously good dynamic changes. The vocalist's deep growls, gravelly shouts, and window-shattering shrieks demonstrate true vocal mastery. All instruments contribute to a fierce and dominant display within the genre. I believe this band has the potential to reach great heights.

I'd happily give this album a solid 8.5/10

Wow. Just wow. I started listening to “Scorn” just because I saw the album in our zine’s folder full of promos, and as I had listened to two singles before and I liked them, I thought “let’s try this full thing”. And I couldn’t be happier with my decision, what a banger I’ve found here!

The whole album maintains a high level of intensity from start to finish. So, it’s not a roller coaster with ups and downs, but like a wagon that stays at the top of the trail all the time. And this is extremely difficult to accomplish. Not a single smooth track, not a lot of air to breathe once you start listening to these 13 songs. Ah maybe you think it’s a long album, but it clocks in at 46 minutes long because some of the tracks are under 3 minutes. And this makes it very dynamic.

This is an astonishing debut album… I can’t imagine what will come next! 9/10

Melodic, technical, frantic, and fucking excellent. That’s how I’m describing Lamenting Satanas’ 2024 release, Scorn.

Bringing brutality, and unrelenting riffs that musically range stylistically from the sounds of Watain all the way through to I don’t know what, to Syphoned? One minute you’re being blasted with black metal and blastbeats only for the next to end up in a riff fest that only adds to the sound and helps to ensure Lamenting Satanas have a style that is unique to themselves.

It’s controversial, but I’ll say it, few American black metal bands have captured the essence of chaos, devotion, and sheer sonic extremity like Lamenting Satanas has. Hailing from America… somewhere, the band have spent the last few years festering unholy sounds which it now, thanks to 2024’s Scorn, is ready to carve a path through the scene, both at home and abroad.

If you’ve not heard Lamenting Satanas already, you’re going to. Bands releasing this calibre of music are only going in one direction, and that’s to the top. Blending raw aggression with technicality and a melodic atmosphere, Lamenting Satanas have created a profound spiritual connection to the dark forces they invoke. Lamenting Satanas’ music is more than just a barrage of blast beats and tremolo riffs: it is an immersive experience, drenched in fire, blood, and the uncompromising essence of true black metal.

It isn’t every day that you come across black/death metal that is both melodic and venomous, but Lamenting Satanas achieve this and more with Scorn. While the music leans towards the melodic side of the genres, the sheer rawness and aggression of its delivery separates it from many of its peers.

What shifted my perspective from “okay this is decent” to “goddamn I love this” are the incredibly powerful segments that the band work into every track. These moments explode out of nowhere and usually have an almost thrashy energy paired with rapid fire vocal delivery with some extra bite to the bark. Depending on the track this explosion of energy may take on a more black or death metal nature. Each brings with it a different sound, energy and vocal delivery that keeps the album fresh and exciting.
